Building One African Market

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), is the world’s largest Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that brings together 55 countries, encompassing over 1.3 billion people, and a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of more than US$ 3.4 trillion. This trade pact is a pivotal step toward fulfilling the African Union’s ambitious Agenda 2063, which envisions an economically transformed and thriving continent. The AfCFTA does not only integrate AU Member States’ markets for goods and services to enhance economic growth and industrialization for sustainable development—it’s positioned to do much more. By breaking down trade barriers, it allows African countries to tap into each other’s resources and talents, making their products and services more competitive on the global stage. This also makes AU member states a more appealing destination for international companies seeking to establish long-term value added operations on the continent. The AfCFTA was launched in Kigali, Rwanda on 21st March 2018 and became operational on 30th May 2019, after 22 African Union (AU) Member States ratified it. Nigeria signed the agreement on 7th July 2019 following an extensive nationwide stakeholder consultation and an impact and readiness assessment. It officially became a State Party to the AfCFTA on 5th December 2020 in preparation for trade commencement on the 1st of January 2021. The National Action Committee (NAC) is the committee saddled with the responsibility of implementing and overseeing the AfCFTA within Nigeria. They’re responsible for ensuring that Nigeria gets the most out of this groundbreaking trade agreement, promoting economic growth, and improving the lives of its people.
